Zelenskyy & Donald Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv is ready for an “energy ceasefire” with Russia if Moscow agrees to stop attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Zelenskyy made the remarks after meeting US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
The two leaders discussed efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, potential steps towards de-escalation and Ukraine’s air defence needs. Zelenskyy described the talks as “positive and productive”.
Writing on X, he said both the United States and Ukraine wanted to see the war end before winter and that they had discussed potential de-escalatory steps that could pave the way for diplomacy.
Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow stopped targeting Ukraine’s energy system.
“We are ready for energy ceasefire,” he said, adding that Russia would also need to stop attacks on Ukraine’s electricity, heating and water infrastructure.
Zelenskyy stressed that there had been no discussion with Trump about Ukraine unilaterally stopping attacks on Russia’s oil industry.
The Ukrainian president also warned that Russia was preparing a new “massive attack” against Ukraine, saying there could be no discussion of easing sanctions while Ukrainians remained under threat from Russian missile and drone strikes.
The push for an energy truce comes after weeks of intensified attacks by both sides on energy and other infrastructure. Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power and fuel facilities, while Ukraine has stepped up strikes on Russian oil refineries and other energy sites.
