Dinajpur exceeds Aman cultivation target with 273,750 hectares

Aman paddy cultivation in the district has exceeded the target by 1,480 hectares this season, with the total cultivated area reaching 273,750 hectares, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
Deputy Director of DAE Md Afzal Hossain said the district had set a target of cultivating Aman paddy on 272,270 hectares of land this year. Favorable weather conditions since the beginning of the season enabled farmers to cultivate an additional 1,480 hectares beyond the target.
"If there is no natural disaster, a bumper Aman harvest is expected this year," he said.
According to the agriculture department, the cultivation plan included 237,720 hectares under high-yielding varieties, 25,350 hectares under hybrid varieties and 9,200 hectares under local varieties. 
The district has set a target of producing around 800,000 tonnes of paddy this season.
Of the additional cultivation, 1,000 hectares were planted with high-yielding varieties and 480 hectares with hybrid varieties.
Farmers cultivated the paddy on 25,520 hectares of land in Sadar upazila, 24,700 hectares in Biral, 17,800 hectares in Bochaganj, 14,700 hectares in Kaharole, 24,650 hectares in Birganj, 14,400 hectares in Khansama, 24,900 hectares in Chirirbandar, 22,750 hectares in Parbatipur, 24,250 hectares in Phulbari, 24,250 hectares in Birampur, 24,350 hectares in Nawabganj, 12,650 hectares in Hakimpur and 17,350 hectares of land in Ghoraghat upazila.
DD Afzal Hossain said he visited Aman fields in several upazilas from September 24 to 27 and spoke with farmers about the condition of the crop. He expressed optimism that the district would achieve a good harvest this season.
Early-maturing Aman varieties are expected to be harvested and threshed from the middle of Kartik, while harvesting will continue throughout the Bengali month of Agrahayan.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE in Dinajpur Md Riaz Uddin said the prospect of a good harvest to the use of improved and high-yielding seed varieties, timely fertilizer application, proper crop management and favorable weather.
"Officials and field-level agricultural workers are providing farmers with necessary advice and support to help them achieve higher yields," he said.
Md Rafiqul Islam, a farmer from Auliapur village in Dinajpur Sadar upazila, said he was hopeful of a good harvest this year.
"I am hopeful because the condition of the crop is good. We also hope that the rice produced here will meet local demand and allow us to supply rice to other districts," he said.
Naren Chandra Roy of Tetulia village in Chirirbandar upazila said he had cultivated Aman on 2.5 acres of land, including two acres with high-yielding varieties and 50 decimals with a hybrid variety.
I hope to bring a good harvest home.
The agriculture department said Dinajpur is widely regarded as one of the country's major food-producing regions, with a significant share of Bangladesh's rice production coming from the district.
