Goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon made several important saves, while Bangladesh also created chances in attack. But the elusive goal never came, as Jamal Bhuiyan, Hamza Choudhury and their teammates suffered their second consecutive defeat in the FIFA ASEAN Cup.
Bangladesh lost 1-0 to Singapore at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Monday, with Harhys Stewart scoring the winner.
Bangladesh had begun their ASEAN Cup campaign with a 3-0 defeat by Malaysia.
It was Bangladesh’s fourth consecutive defeat to Singapore.
The two sides have now met five times, with Bangladesh still searching for their first win. Singapore have won four of those matches, while the other ended in a draw. Their first meeting at the Merdeka Tournament in 1973 ended 1-1.
Both teams tried to retain possession from the start, although neither created a clear scoring opportunity in the opening stages.
Singapore produced their first significant chance in the 16th minute when Ilhan Fandi tested Srabon, who made the save and conceded a corner.
Srabon came to Bangladesh’s rescue again in the 33rd minute, keeping out a dangerous free-kick from outside the penalty area. Singapore threatened from the rebound, but Tariq Kazi cleared the danger.
Two minutes later, Singapore broke the deadlock. Nur Adam Abdullah delivered a cross and Stewart headed the ball past Srabon to put Singapore ahead.
Bangladesh improved after the break and had a good opportunity to equalise in the 64th minute when Shamit Shome met Saad Uddin’s cross while unmarked, but his header went over the bar.
Another chance came in the 80th minute, but Rakib Hossain’s header went narrowly wide.
Five minutes later, Bangladesh built another promising attack. Substitute Fahamedul Islam tried to find Rakib inside the Singapore penalty area, but a defender intervened before he could complete the pass.
Despite an improved second-half performance, Bangladesh could not find an equaliser and had to settle for a 1-0 defeat.
Bangladesh will face hosts Indonesia in their final Group A match on October 1 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
